Learn more about Barcaldine

The Tree of Knowledge, a heritage-listed ghost gum, tells the storey of Australia's 1891 shearers' strike through engaging museum exhibits. Visit the Australian Workers Heritage Centre to explore outdoor machinery displays and learn about rural working life in the outback.

This poor old tree, once a glorious ghost gum, stands at the birthplace of the Australian Labor Party. It was first sick and then poisoned in the 90s in an act of vandalism. This memorial was built around it and all the long timbers above it form a huge wooden wind chime. I love the sound of it in a breeze. Barcaldine is a typical Queensland town, pub on every corner and excellent old school local bakeries :) I feel at home somewhere like this.
