"The rooms were big and spacious that I've ever stayed thus far. It had nice views. However, looking at the condition of the resort, it needs a makeover. It has not lift which was fine if your luggage were not heavy. But it will be dangerous if you are staying at the second floor and have heavy luggage."

Learn more about Harau

Dramatic limestone cliffs tower over Harau Valley's emerald rice fields, where local guides lead hikes to hidden waterfalls. Rent a motorbike to explore nearby Bukittinggi's traditional Minangkabau architecture and sample authentic rendang at the Pasar Atas market.

Harau Valley, Sumatra, Indonesia

We stayed at Abdi Homestay, one of only three other homestays in the area that we could see. It consists of five bungalows (one attached to kitchen) that in one direction faces a rice field and the other is against a sheer cliff with a waterfall. It’s the perfect setting to sit back in one of their hammocks and relax and read a book.

The bungalows are extremely spacious with a large bed downstairs, a clean washroom with Western toilet and mandi shower and a loft upstairs with another bed and a small patio. There is always a flask of boiling water on your table for all day tea and coffee.

At 120,000 rupiah per night (that's $12 Canadian!) it was a sweet escape.
