Spy into the U.S. from the impressive vista atop a historic building. Join art classes and watch a musical performance.

Art events take place in the Casa de la Cultura, which is housed in a building that played an important role in the city’s history. The majestic structure of neoclassical design opened as the home of a primary school in 1929. Now enjoy its visual art workshops, musicals, children’s classes and many elaborate features.

Learn about the rich history of the cultural centre’s building. The architect modelled it after a school in Yuma, Arizona. Its distinguishing feature is the red bricks, which are typical of the Tijuana region. Several educational institutes occupied the site until the 1970s, when it became a home of the arts.

Enjoy the panoramic vista from the top of the large structure. See how many landmarks you recognise in Tijuana and neighboring California. Take a relaxing stroll around the pleasant grounds to encounter a charming fountain. The bench in the tranquil garden full of trees and green vegetation offers the opportunity for a relaxing break.

Watch a play or a musical in the renovated theatre, which seats 410 spectators. Browse works of art in the galleries, with photography installations and painting exhibits. A blend of emerging talent and well-known names grace the stage.

Peruse novels, artists’ biographies and literary papers at the Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez Library. Students from nearby schools can often be seen searching through the shelves for useful books.

The centre’s classes and workshops teach a range of subjects from languages to dance and music.

Sip a coffee and have a snack in the sophisticated surroundings of the Café Literario, where works of art dot around the walls. Attend a book reading in the café.

The house is open daily from morning to evening on weekdays. It also opens on Saturday if there are special presentations or events.

The Casa de la Cultura is near the U.S. border in the northern part of Tijuana. Drive 6 miles (9.7 kilometres) west from Tijuana International Airport to reach the cultural centre. The bus or taxi journey should take about 20 minutes.
