  • Kentucky State University was chartered in May 1886 as the State Normal School for Colored Persons, only the second state-supported institution of higher learning in Kentucky.[1] During the euphoria of Frankfort's 1886 centennial celebration, the city donated $1,500 towards the purchase of land for a new college on a bluff overlooking Frankfort. The new school formally opened on October 11, 1887, with three teachers, 55 students, and John H. Jackson as president.[1] Recitation Hall (now Jackson Hall), the college's first permanent building, was erected in that year. KSU became a land-grant college in 1890, and the departments of home economics, agriculture and mechanics were added to the school's curriculum.[1] The school produced its first graduating class of five students in the spring of that year. A high school was organized in 1893. This expansion continued into the 20th century in both name and program. In 1902, the name was changed to Kentucky Normal and Industrial Institute for Colored Persons. The name was changed again in 1926 to Kentucky State Industrial College for Colored Persons.

The hotel is under a much needed renovation, but was still quite noisy. The hotel doors slam loudly and traffic noise is loud if room is on Wilkinson Blvd. side of the hotel. Hopefully, the renovation helps this. The staff is very friendly.

Hotel is going through renovations which it desperately needs. The staff did not seem to care about guest service or making guest feel welcome. Breakfast was mediocre at best. Attention to detail did not seem important to management.

Staff was clueless Construction went on after 10 pm Bathroom sink was plugged Toilet valve leaked and kept running intermittently Breakfast was rudimentary and not very warm Had to walk outside around the block to get to the parking garage due to construction I can go on but I think I got my point across .

Very nice, the only reason for the lower score is that the hotel was under construction and some things weren't available because of that. My biggest disappointment was that nothing in the hotel was open while I was there on a Sunday night, the lounge and restaurant were both closed. The downtown area is within walking distance, but I did not feel safe walking there alone at night.

Room had stained toilet seat lid, dry rotting curtains, small TV, harassive cleaners that started bothering me before 7am and did so 3 times! Back entrance by the parking lot had a messed up key reader. Expedia showed a $10 credit for snacks which was not the case! They had some janky snack white bag for you with no choices! So you may not be able to even eat the items they give!

This was our 4th stay at this hotel over the past 15 or so years. Previously the hotel was always clean, comfortable and nicely furnished. During our recent stay the rooms were very worn and we discovered the hotel was under renovation. As a result, the hotel was very short staffed, so we received no housekeeping services and had to pick up room supplies at the front desk. The staff we encountered were friendly and efficient. Although our stay was subpar compared to previous stays, it served our purpose. This property will be spectacular after the remodel is complete, until then, you may want to consider staying elsewhere. I feel like we should have been notified of the renovation during the reservation process, so we could have considered alternative arrangements. I'll stay here again after renovations are complete.

The power to the hotel blacked out, a little after 10:00 pm. And, didn’t resume, until a little after 5:00 am. The light switch in the bathroom was in need of repair. Also, there was a dead ladybug on the bed.

Don't believe the pictures when looking at hotel this online. Pictures make it look great and after reading the reviews we booked for a night. Hotel has a great foyer but fountain doesn't work and sign stating pardon our mess (and there was one). Upon entering the room I saw where holes had been drilled into the dresser and the decor of the room literally screamed the 80's want their hotel back. VERY dated. We booked this hotel because the site said there was a restaurant and lounge. We had been driving all day and was looking forward to a quiet dinner and sleep. Well, the restaurant was not open and the lounge was only open for dinner hours with a limited menu. Lounge was so cold there was an electric fireplace set against a wall and customers could be heard "I'm going to get my jacket" prior to eating. The fireplace must have been for ambiance only because it put out no heat. Mind you, this is just off the lobby. If you are just looking for a place to sleep, its OK but if you're looking for a more up to date place to sleep, eat and lounge, recommend finding somewhere else.

The rooms are run down, my shower head leaked so bad that it sprayed over the shower curtain, my blankets legit had cigarette burns in them. Not joking. And if you're room is on the street side, it's unbelievably loud. Also most uncomfortable bed ive slept in. Locals i talked to all know to avoid this place
