  • Kentucky State University was chartered in May 1886 as the State Normal School for Colored Persons, only the second state-supported institution of higher learning in Kentucky.[1] During the euphoria of Frankfort's 1886 centennial celebration, the city donated $1,500 towards the purchase of land for a new college on a bluff overlooking Frankfort. The new school formally opened on October 11, 1887, with three teachers, 55 students, and John H. Jackson as president.[1] Recitation Hall (now Jackson Hall), the college's first permanent building, was erected in that year. KSU became a land-grant college in 1890, and the departments of home economics, agriculture and mechanics were added to the school's curriculum.[1] The school produced its first graduating class of five students in the spring of that year. A high school was organized in 1893. This expansion continued into the 20th century in both name and program. In 1902, the name was changed to Kentucky Normal and Industrial Institute for Colored Persons. The name was changed again in 1926 to Kentucky State Industrial College for Colored Persons.

Staff was great and actually found a room that was blocked off for us after Expedia had a miscommunication and the St Clair did not have our reservation. Luckily the owner was inside and sat with his laptop and got us taken care of. Had he not been there we would not have had a room that we had a confirmation and paid for. Great place. Terrible customer service by Expedia!!

It was very difficult to get my things to the room. I had to park about a block away and take the stairs down to street level (no elevator), walking through pee smellong stairs past a homeless person. Then had to go up more stairs to my room (no elevator). This was very difficult for me with a bad back. The room was 65 degrees, and I received a message from the host not to touch the HVAC in CAPS. That seems like they're yelling at guests to keep the room cold. The room itself was nice, and the price was reasonable.

A super cool loft well laid out and very hip. Bed was wonderful and I would recommend this place for anyone visiting Frankfort. Great location for exploring this beautiful old school charming town. Or if you’re starting your bourbon tour. You guys did a great job on layout and function with a nicely appointed kitchen and of course the most comfy bed. This is a must stay spot for all visitors. See you again soon I hope.

Exceptional! The rooms were large and beds VERY comfortable! Loved the living room area. Location was fantastic; we ate at the Italian restaurant a few doors down. Will definitely be back and would highly recommend this boutique hotel to others!

Fabulous boutique hotel. Great location in the upmarket town of Frankfort. Lots of bars, restaurants and coffee shops in directly area. Lobby area is linked to a great bar restaurant downstairs…. Can park outside on quiet side road between 5pm to 10am overnight but other car parking not far. Check in was a bit difficult because there is no staff. and you were supposed to pre check in like an Air B&B. It was a good thing the people at the bar were able to help. The room was wonderful.

Upon arrival our original room hadn't been cleaned. I sent a text to their number and received an immediate response. They were very apologetic and assigned us to another room right away! Customer service is top notch! We absolutely loved the room! The bed is so comfy and linens smelled nice and fresh. The building is very secure. I don't think there's much worry about that though because the neighborhood seemed really clean and friendly. This will be my to go place when we visit Kentucky! Thank you for a pleasant stay!

Property was very nice. Couple of recommendations - add a table lamp into the 2nd bedroom, with no window its very dark to only have an overhead light. - wd 40 the bedroom doors - leave a spare roll of bathroom tissue ours was almost empty when we arrived with no spare - I sent a txt about this and never received a response - provide tissues

The room was decent, could use a good cleaning. What is seriously lacking is insulation!! The rooms are so incredibly loud. I could hear every footstep and word from above, the band playing below in the bar until late, street noise, etc. Definitely not for anyone who needs sleep. I wouldn't stay again.

The St.Clair was a unique property that was warm, welcoming and very comfortable. The staff communicated frequently via text or email to ensure our stay was going smoothly. We loved the decor and cleanliness of the St. Clair. There were many options for dining within walking distance and attractions were a short drive away. The Howser Tavern inside of the St.Clair is beautifully appointed, has a wonderful and friendly staff and delicious cocktails and food. I would highly recommend a stay at the St.Clair. We hope to return one day soon!
