Palacio de Revillagigedo

This grand Baroque structure, originally designed as a palace complex, is now a cultural centre and an icon of the city.

Visit the 18th-century Palacio de Revillagigedo to admire its splendid Baroque architecture and to check out the artistic programming. Today the structure stands as a fine example of palatial architecture in the Asturian region as well as a dynamic cultural center for Gijón and its surrounds.

Take a moment to appreciate the grandeur and elegance of the palace’s design. The structure was built in the Baroque fashion in 1704 on the orders of Carlos Miguel Ramírez de Jove, the first Marquis of San Esteban del Mar. The palace incorporates the remains of a tower that dated back to the 15th century. Admire the visual contrast between the rich decorations and columns of the palace’s central body and the minimal look of its medieval-style crenellated towers.

In 1991, after a process of renovation, the palace was re-opened to the public as the Cajastur Cultural Center. The mission of this young institution is to promote and bring together the various forms of contemporary artistic and cultural expression. Now Gijón’s iconic Baroque palace plays host to a program of activities, ranging from art exhibitions and musical performances to conferences and courses. Check event listings online in advance in case your visit coincides with something of interest.

Save a moment to admire the structure adjacent to the palace, the Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista. This charming chapel was built in 1720 after designs by Pedro Muñiz Somonte. It too is used for exhibitions and performances.

The Palacio de Revillagigedo is located on the Plaza del Marqués, a short walk from central Gijón and the Puerto Deportivo. The palace is open every day except Mondays. Opening hours vary with the seasons and may be affected by programming, so check in advance. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement. Admission is free.
