  • The California Condor was a common sight along the Columbia River in Lewis and Clark's day. By the early 1980's, there were only twenty-two left on the face of the planet, all in California. Today, thanks to a massive effort to re-populate the species via in-captivity pairing, there are some two-hundred members. But their recovery is far from assured. The Oregon Zoo has undertaken its own recovery effort whose ultimate goal is the re-introduction of the species into the protected wilderness area around the Columbia River Gorge. In short, to bring them home. For now, they live out their days in a vast, outdoor aviary designed specifically to mimic their habitat in the wild. If you have never seen one up close before, I urge you to come take a look. They are larger than any flying bird you will ever see, unless you go to Peru. And though black and white practically from head to toe, their plumage shines and reflects the light like dark, polished metal. If that doesn't suit your fancy, I will tell you that, as with all big birds, if you wait around long enough, they will do something so awe-inspiring that it will take your breath away, and something so goofy that you will laugh out loud. The room itself was clean, but I'm quite certain that the bedsheets had not been changed. The bed was made, but the sheets had numerous stains that should have come out in washing, and there was dirt between them. I did not stay; I decided to go elsewhere.

OK but...

It was OK - the room itself was comfortable, the pillows were way too firm for their thickness. The 10 inch thickness combined with a very soft mattress did not make for a good nights sleep.

The proprietor was the kindest motel owner/manager I've met in a long time - helped me out when my phone was missing and didn't charge for phone calls. The building is basic but very well run, and quiet for such a convenient location. A gem of a budget option!

Worse place to stay

Mouse droppings IN the bed. Sheets had other stains, obvious that they were not clean. The website showed it to be a 3 Star hotel. Horrible, filthy and run down.

Nice people, safe enough, but an archetypal bad hotel. Light switches not working, bathroom door knob broken, weird smells, etc. Had to fix the shower with a toolkit from my car, and the keycard would not stay magnetized, locking me out repeatedly. Only stay here in desperate need.

Full size oven, SMALL refrigerator with dirty freezer; trash left under sink; non-smoking room that reeked of smoke--we spent many hours airing it out, but it still smelled of cigarettes; hole in the wall where the shower head came out. Convenient location.

The staff was good at checkin, very helpful. At around 1a.m., someone next door slammed the door so hard, 3 times that 1 of our pictures fell off thewall. We were ready to call 911. It finally quieted down.
