"WHAT A FIND! When I was first looking for somewhere to stay in Stromness I have to admit that I was quite disappointed not to be able to find anywhere overlooking the harbour. Then I saw 'Withy Gill' listed on the website and booked for a 4 night stay in August. Having now had our holiday and wandered round Orkney and Stromness, how glad am I that I found it ! Simon the host contacted us a few times before our trip and always responded to any queries we had. The cottage itself is great, exactly as the description with lovely views over to the Hills of Hoy. The interior was immaculate and the furniture looks brand new, it is warm, cosy and somewhere I could quite happily live in with everything you need (including little extras like a welcome pack, the binoculars in the kitchen, games, reading books and snuggly throws in the living room :)) We will be returning to Orkney in the future and wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else."

"Come and enjoy proper hospitality in a proper hotel with wonderful people. Just like it used to be before life was overtaken by digital awfulness. If you want room service ordered through your TV then stay away. Sensational breakfast (that can also serve as lunch and beyond). Our second visit since 2022, the hotel holds a special place in our lives."

"Perfect place to stay in the quiet and laid back village of Dounby as it is close to a lot of archeological sites which are about 10 to 20 minutes away in every direction. Very friendly and attentive staff. Great food as well. Spacious parking in the back. There is a gas station and a market across the street so you don’t have to worry about driving too far to refuel and get food. This place will be my go-to the next time I travel to Orkney Islands!"

"Perfect 'utilitarian' accommodation for a fan of hostels ... ... The building is not particularly attractive and the rooms are basic and afford no good views ... However, the beds are comfortable, the many bathrooms/shower rooms are newly equipped and excellent, the kitchens are great, the dinning room large & practical, and the lounge very comfortable and equipped with board games & books along with comfy settees. The hostel is a few minutes walk into the centre of town and just a mile from a lovely swimming beach at Scapa where I swam every morning, except for a couple of mornings when I drove a little further to Inganess Beach which is beautiful. For me, so much nicer than a posh hotel because you can cook & eat at any time and fellow visitors always seem relaxed, friendly & chatty ... you just seem to get a much better class of person in a Scottish hostel!"

"Absolutely amazing location, and great host. All the appliances worked (and we cooked frequently in the kitchen that offered space enough for 2 to be comfortable). The bedrooms at the top of the stairs were compact but had a table and chair in each, for those who need laptop or writing space. The living room was cozy. (The toilet was a bit loud, but nothing egregious.) The LOCATION was fantastic. I was concerned that possibly there would be noise from the harbor across the street…nothing. Ships came and went. There’s a good bakery, amazing butcher shop, and at least one charity shop (and museum) within walking distance, let alone a Co-op for all basic necessities. Would be glad to stay here again! Much prettier than Kirkwall. "
