I like Scandia; peaceful place. If you are a respectful guest and follow the rules of the property you will have a good stay. Be mindful of noise and remember others paid to be at the motel too. The management is kind and appreciates good guests. Scandia gives you the best of 2 areas. Located on the Northern tip of Carlsbad Village, it is surrounded by parks, a private school (historic Army/Navy Academy, love their chimes at night!) and the Buena Vista lagoon (first ecological reserve in Ca.). The moon over the lagoon at night is mesmerizing and beautiful. Lots of birds. The train runs at the back of the motel but it just becomes background with an occasional slow freight train or a quick Amtrak going by, not noisy. It’s the best of Carlsbad and neighboring Oceanside as it is on the border. Oceanside has a booming restaurant scene emerging with an interesting vast array of cuisine choices. Oceanside is a little more funky and Carlsbad has history and architecture. You can walk into Oceanside from Scandia as the area is pedestrian-friendly. The surrounding eucalyptus/pine trees are very old and tell their own story of the area. The room is cozy, has all you need. Free parking near your room, microwave, fridge, heater/fan, nice bathroom/shower. Place is very well run and organized. Good housekeeping staff! You can walk a few minutes to the sand and waves. I have all good things to say of Scandia. Well-lit and security cameras, safe for the solo traveller.
