Costinesti is a haven for ravers on Romania’s eastern coast. Overlooking the Black Sea, the pretty town draws young crowds to its beaches in the hot summer. Its most famous landmark is the Obelisk rising above the sand as an icon of the town. Dance to the beat of booming rave music on the shore at this lively destination.
Enjoy sunshine at the Costinesti Beach just east of the town centre. Rent a deckchair and sizzle in the heat, before having a refreshing swim in the sea. Buy mud samples, said to contain healing properties, from the adjoining Lake Costinesti. The permanent appearance of the Evangelia shipwreck just off the coast provides excellent photo and diving opportunities.
Walk along the bridge that crosses the lake to connect the northern and southern sections of the long beach. Gaze up at the impressive Obelisk, which comprises six curved columns of varying sizes and bends. It is a popular gathering point for visitors due to its height of 61 feet (18 metres).
After meeting friends, go to the centre of town to see St. John the Baptist Cathedral. Admire its white façade and red spires. Watch a spectacle with dancing and local musical acts at the Summer Theatre beside the lake.
Try the fresh fish at one of the restaurants serving local delicacies. As night takes over, explore the many bars and nightclubs near the beach. Dance until the early morning and then head to the beach to restart the day.
The area has warm to hot summers, when it attracts the most crowds, and rainy and windy winters.
Costinesti is not far from the Bulgarian border in the southeastern part of Romania. The resort lies 19 miles (30 kilometres) south of Constanta in the county of the same name. Fly to Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport and drive south for 35 miles (56 kilometres) to reach the town.
Costinesti, with its bars, clubs and shops, is a fun retreat for the young at heart.
