See the fascinating artworks and eclectic furniture in the ancient hilltop home and museum of one of Israel's best known artists.

The Ilana Goor Museum showcases the art and influences of the go-getting Israeli artist Ilana Goor. Set in a historic building that itself is worth admiring, her intricate artworks and eclectic taste make it a truly fascinating place to visit. Being a private museum, the building remains Ilana’s home and is constantly evolving.

As you approach the museum, admire the bastion-like building first. Originally built in 1742, this solid stone shelter was the first Jewish home built outside of the original Jaffa walls. Having served as a safe haven for Jews on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and as an olive oil soap and perfume factory, the grand building has had many incarnations before Ilana purchased part of it in 1983. She soon acquired the rest and transformed the old structure into a grand museum in the early 1990s.

Begin in the atrium and slowly make your way through the wonderful building. As well as artwork, sculpture and furniture by Ilana Goor herself, she has sourced many eye-catching pieces from local and international artists.

All the rooms have different themes and displays, creating a sense of wonder over and over again. Just go with the flow and explore mystical rooms such as the vibrant Monks’ Room and the spiritual Christian Room. For contrast, visit the impressive Sculpture Room first and then follow on to the Ethnic Art Collection with its myriad carved wooden forms and figures. The opulent Library holds a collection of books on Israel and its culture and art and its walls are lined with photos and paintings.

To learn about the exhibits in more detail, consider taking a public or private guided tour of the museum. Various art workshops are also available and the gift shop sells artistic souvenirs. Finish your tour on top of the building in the Sculpture Garden, from where you can take in the serene view of the Mediterranean Ocean and Old Jaffa below.

The Ilana Goor Museum is open daily, except during the Erev Yom Kippur and Yom Kippur holidays. Families receive a discount. Park in the Old Jaffa parking lot or take a bus to get here from Central Tel Aviv.
