Mararikulam Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Marari Beach showing a sandy beach
Fine white sand, crystal-clear blue water, a traditional fishing village and side trips to the Kerala backwaters await at this idyllic beach.

Visit the glorious Marari Beach, backed by swaying coconut groves, and gaze out across glistening water. This unspoiled wonderland on the Arabian Sea offers the chance to relax far from the city bustle and crowds often associated with India. Take a stroll along Marari Beach and feel the powdery white sand run smoothly between your toes. Bask in the opportunity to enjoy a beach largely devoid of any commercialization.

At the seashore, spot crabs and schools of multicolored fish swimming in the transparent water. Watch as fishermen bring in the day’s catch via old wooden fishing boats. Cool off from the hot sun with a refreshing swim, being careful to avoid strong currents. Alternatively, sit beneath the shade of one of the many palm and coconut trees. In the evening, join local families watching a spectacular sunset.

A great part of the beach’s appeal is that there are no hawkers, no market stalls and only a few restaurants, just beachgoers and stunning natural beauty. If you plan to spend a day here, it’s a good idea to bring a picnic and drinks.

Behind the beach is the sleepy village of Mararikulam. Attractions in the village include Chamundi Devi Temple and Valavanadu Puthenkavu Devi Temple. The village is also a great place to arrange trips to the breathtaking Kerala backwaters. Relax on a man-powered boat as you glide along tree-shaded canals, lakes and lagoons neighboring rural villages.

The beach is located in the Alappuzha District of Kerala state and is about a 25-minute drive from Alappuzha (aka Alleppey). Get here by catching a train to Mararikulam station and then take an auto-rickshaw to the beach.

Marari Beach has warm temperatures year-round. However, expect heavy showers from June to July and October to December. Visit in late December through March for an almost perfect climate of hot, sunny days and little rainfall.

"The hotel was excellent! Clean, eco friendly, staff very polite, and wonderful location. We wish we could stayed longer. We had yoga class in the morning, massage and breakfast, then we had to go to our next destination. Check in could have been a little faster."

8/10 Very Good! (1 review)
Homely stay with awesome pancakes!!!
"To stay this close to a family is always something special. On one hand you get a very personal relationship to the hosts which gives you a more proper introduction to the local life compared to staying at a hotel. On the other hand a hotel gives you more privacy than a homestay does. We really liked ..."
