Learn more about Mykines

Hike along dramatic cliffs to see the iconic lighthouse and thousands of puffins nesting on this remote westernmost island. Take a guided tour to spot seabirds and enjoy breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against rugged shorelines.

Mykines, a small island off the coast of Vagar in Faroe Islands is home to the second largest puffin colony in the world. Nothing prepared us for the sights that awaited us on this island. A million gannets flew over cliffs welcoming us. A short hike up on a hill and hundreds of puffins crossed our path as we made our way to the Mykines lighthouse. This island is one of the breeding colonies for these birds and one could observe them fly in and out of their nests and hunt for fish from the ocean. As one stands on a hiking trail surrounded by thousands of puffins, the thrill of observing nature take its own course is something else altogether!
