Overall, our stay at Viva Azteca was enjoyable in many ways. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff did a commendable job keeping the beach area as clear as possible during a difficult seaweed season. The pool was also very nice and well-maintained.
However, several areas fell short of expectations. The amenities advertised were underwhelming. The “game room,” for instance, was disappointing. It featured only one old, broken pool table with damaged cues and missing pocket nets, making it nearly unusable.
The dinner experience, in terms of service and ambiance, was pleasant. However, the biggest issue during our stay was with the food itself—specifically, how food allergies were handled. My family has peanut allergies, and I had called the hotel ahead of time to confirm that they could accommodate this. I was assured that they could.
Unfortunately, that was not our experience upon arrival. At the Mayan Cuisine restaurant, we informed our server of our allergies, and he seemed unconcerned. He told us he couldn’t guarantee the dishes were nut-free, which contradicted what we had been told before our trip. Still, we ordered dishes he claimed were safe. Within 30 minutes, my son broke out in hives, and I experienced the beginning of an allergic reaction myself. Thankfully, we had emergency medication on hand.
