Four stars would be more accurate for this hotel. Despite several disappointments, however, it's still a good value. The hotel did't seem at all crowded. Yet I was given a room facing a nearby construction site making moderate-level constant pounding noises. I asked for a room change and was given a room on the other side of the hotel, which I believe was an upgrade because it had a great view of the river. It took too long for the room change to be made, and I'm surprised that the upgrade wasn't automatic when the hotel wasn't fully booked and there was construction noise that made working difficult and generally would significantly decrease the quality of a stay. I needed a plug converter and more water in the room. I received both but it was another long weight. This made the check-in process take an hour. A few things in the room like chairs and tables showed damage and wear, but the room was clean. I was looking forward to swimming, and it took two tries for me to have a good experience at the pool. The first time I went in the late afternoon, and found I needed a cap to swim. Still, I walked around and found the shower area unclean and swimming classes going on, and they were loud. I decided to come back later. I returned at 9 pm with my cap and had a better experience. There were still lessons being given but few enough people that I enjoyed the pool. Positives - the river view was excellent and I slept well. I also had a good massage.

Poor WiFi Connectivity and very low or No Aircon flow . Booked the hotel room with breakfast but was asked to pay for breakfast during check in. After much hassle of finding my booking and showing it to them , and they take time to verify with their accounts department , then they decide to include breakfast for me. All the while, they were so insistent that my booking was without breakfast. In the end, they promised a fruit basket to my room but was never delivered. On my last day , I went down to reception to ask about the fruit basket. This time, they reluctantly sent the fruit basket which is essentially 1 apple , 1 orange and 1 apple in a row , on a rickety old wooden tray. This doesn’t look like the standard of a fruit basket from a 5 Stars Intercontinental Hotel! I have photos of this and will share with you all.

The overall experience at this stay is great. But recommend that the concierge services has to be improved. I tried to pass an envelope to my colleague staying at another room. The staff just put the envelope into the drawer, without mark onto record nor require to sign for receipt. This reflects that the security of any items handled via the concierge is in risk.

Great Hotel. Poor Location.
The hotel itself was great. All of my interactions with the hotel staff were great. My room was clean and had a great view of the river. My room had breakfast included and it was a good thing. There is NOTHING in the area.You are at least a 15 minute walk from the closest metro station. Apart from the two restaurants in the hotel, there were no other food places nearby. Its probably a 15 minute walk to the closest outside dining as well.

The hotel is located adjacent to the Huangpu River, thus most guest rooms can overlook the fantastic river view. The hotel is 5-min drive to the Metro Line station, The River Mall & Mercedes-Benz Arena, where you can have a lot of dining & entertainment choices. However, you can also choose to dine in one of the restaurants on the opposite side of the hotel, within 2 minutes of walking distance. River view is very nice. But not easy to go around the city (not close to subway), no shopping malls.

Modern hotel with great views
Once I walked in, it was a wow for the beautiful lobby and nice decoration at Shanghai Expo, Pudong. The room is spacy and liked the mattresses. There's a big living area, and extra bathroom. Very impressed by the hotel facilities and the friendly staff.

The entire staff were awesome and always courteous and helpful. Through the ordeal of the theft/loss if my US passport, the hotel staff assisted me in every way in making the passport/visa replacement ordeal less stressful. I enjoyed my stay as the room was very comfortable and had a great view of the river and Nanpu Bridge. The neighborhood is quiet but not difficult to get a taxi. It's within walking distance to the Mercedes-Benz Arena for which I attended a concert and the walk along the river was pleasant and easy.

Very western style hotel
A very nice business hotel close to the heart of Shanghai, but not walking distance to/from any major attraction. You'll need a taxi to go anywhere and back. Rooms are big. Equipped with everything you need: Large and comfy bed. Bathtub and shower. Complimentary water bottles. Free WiFi service with high-speed service (yet subject to typical China content filtering policies). Nice gym. Valet laundry. ATM machine. Check-in/out quick and staff speaks good english. Bell-boy will instruct taxi driver where to take you and will give you a card with hotel address for the return trip. On-site restaurant with an eclectic menu serves three meals a day either buffet or a-la-carte. A nice bar in the hotel's garden offering a reasonable variety of international and local drinks. Distances (depending on traffic): Pudong airport: 40 minutes without traffic. During rush-hour it is recommended to use the MAGLEV train. Station is about 20-25 minutes from hotel and the train ride is 5-7 minutes end to end. Shanghai TV tower/IFC mall - about 10-15 minutes drive or an hour walk. The Bund: 15 minutes ride across the bridge to other side of the river. Shanghai Expo: 5 minutes ride or 20 minutes walk.

Meals need improvement.
The hotel is situated on the Pudong Side of the river NOT the Shanghai side as shown on Wotif web site. Facilities are clean and the view from the room was stunning (even if not of where it was shown). The hotel is a $20 Rmb taxi ride to the expo centre. Meals were the only down side. We took a deluxe dinning package that was terrible breakfast was pathetic and uneditable on this package, we walked out and went to the main dinning area where the food was editable. A lot of the food looked like it was left over from the past, dried out and unappetising, the fruit was good. The evening meal was just a matter of finding bits and pieces that made up a meal. I only ate there once that was enough. There are some good restaurants near the exhibition centre. The wait staff were trying hard.

Extreemly high quality hotel
Stayed for just one night, regretted that I couldn't stay longer to enjoy the hotel. Very nice hotel, clean, large, modern rooms. Very good food in the hotel restaurants. Only reason for a 4 overall rating is that the meal prices were a bit high.

Home away from home in Shanghai
Great hotel located in a quiet area of Shanghai and fairly central. Breakfast buffet is worth the stay alone. Staff is friendly and able to communicate in english. Amenities are terrific, especially the health club (complimentary) and Liquor Factory (late night lounge). Highly recommend. I've stayed here 8 times over the past 2 years.

pudong shanghai expo
intercontintal is a great hotel chain but this one is run by their B team. not the same standards that you would find across the river in Puxi or even over in Lujiazui. This hotel was built for the shanghai expo and thats about all it was good for in terms of location, Now that the expo is long gone this hotel is out in the middle of no where. It's not close to anything of interest.

Great Hotel for events, meetings, seminars etc. Not good if you have to go for meetings around town. Had to wait 30 minutes for a taxi during peak hours. Fortunately the hotel makes you aware of the long waiting time for transportation beforehand.

It doesn't get any better than this
My wife and I spent a memorable and extremely pleasant 5 nights here. Although an extremely onerous international conference started while we there and despite the Customs-like security at the entry, restricted access to lifts and more, this hotel exceeded all expectations. Located right beside the river, with Shanghai City as a backdrop, we had access to delightful river walks and a feeling of open space which is not easy to get in this huge city. The building is also exceptionally well designed , maintained and functional. Mother's Day Lunch was a special affair in the Western/Chinese/Japanese buffet. The range was virtually unlimited, so of course the cost was substantial, but isn't that better than making do with second-best when time is limited? The Club Lounge was a home away from home, an oasis of relaxation. Consider a room upgrade to Club status if available - it is worth it, whether your travel is for business or leisure. In short, the best hotel I have stayed in, anywhere, with top flight staff and cuisine. We are retirees, using our own money from our own pockets. No company cards, no tax offsets. When on holiday we place extra value on comfort and quality, which we certainly received in Shanghai.
