Sueda Art Gallery

Sueda Art Gallery
Works of two of Japan’s best-known modernist sculptors and artists fill this private museum, making it feel a bit like entering their home, full of an easy intimacy.

Husband-and-wife duo Ryusuke Sueda and Shiori Sueda have been emblems of Japan’s artistic life for decades. There is no better place to get close to and understand their work than the Sueda Art Gallery. Housed in a building designed by the famous modernist architect Hiroshi Hara, it is an immersive experience. Walk past many iterations of work by the two both inside the building and outside, in a well-maintained garden whose landscaping is set off by the almost impersonal forms of the art.

Enter the museum and put on the slippers provided, a simple action that adds to the homeyness of the atmosphere. Start with the indoor collection, which changes intermittently as the artists create new pieces. Follow the gentle curves of the metal and plastic that seem full of movement despite their complete stillness. Admire the mixed-media approach of both artists, incorporating many materials, including textiles.

Go out into the garden, where some of Sueda Ryusuke’s more monumental sculptures are displayed. Notice how, despite their obvious modernity, these somewhat weatherworn pieces seem to blend perfectly into the environment. Sit and appreciate the quiet of the setting.

Before returning to the excitement of Yufuin proper, turn back to appreciate the solemn simplicity of the building itself. See how the herringbone pattern of the exterior woodwork adds a subtle amount of decoration to the dark gray, almost black exterior.

Bid farewell and set off along the forested road with a better understanding of many aspects of Japanese contemporary art.

Sueda Art Gallery is located east of downtown Yufuin, a short walk from Bussanji Temple. Walk here from Yufuin Station in about 20 minutes, or drive in less than 10 minutes. Walk from nearby Kinrin Lake in 8 minutes. A parking lot is available.

The museum is open daily during regular business hours. Since it is privately owned, it can sometimes seem closed. Ring the bell to have the lights turned on. The site has an entrance fee. Visit the small shop and café inside the museum.
