Temple of Khnum

Rameses III smiting his enemies in a single blow. The temple and carvings date from the Greco-Roman period (50-250AD). This is a great temple to visit on a Nile cruise as the hypostyle hall still has it's ceiling. The ruins sit 30ft (9m) below present-day street level in an excavated pit. Despite its impressive size, only the hypostyle hall has been excavated - the entire temple is about four times larger but still lies buried beneath the streets.
