#StunningStructures #JaisalmerFort, Rajasthan,India... Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest fully preserved fortified cities in the world. It is a World Heritage Site. It was built in 1156 AD by the Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal. The fort stands amidst the sandy expanse of the great Thar Desert, on Trikuta Hill. The fort is 1,500 ft (460 m) long and 750 ft (230 m) wide and is built on a hill that raises above a height of 250 ft (76 m) above the surrounding country side. The basement of the fort has a 15 ft (4.6 m) tall wall forming a double line of defence. The bastions of the fort forms a chain about 30 ft (9.1 m). The fort has four entrances to the townside, one of which used to be guarded by cannon.

Entering the Sonar Kella/Golden Fortress of Jaisalmer. Its a one of the forts where still families of different castes in Rajasthan lives in small homes and their main source of livelihood is handicrafts and hotels and tourism. Almost every other home has been converted to small rooftop hotels. For us Bengalis, visiting the Sonar Kella at least once in life is a child's dream come true. Each and every resident in this Kila and tour guides appreciates the fact that the tourism surrounding this Fort and rather whole of Jaisalmer boomed only after 1974, after the timeless movie 'Sonar Kella' by the world renowned and late Bengali director
Satyajit Ray. The more reason why I said, its a dream come true for every Bengali to be here as we've grown up watching this movie and still enjoy it time and again. Such majestic and gorgeous is the fort filled with heartwarming souls. We shall be back again.❤️ #goldenfortress #sonarkella #jaisalmer #rajasthandiaries
