The Thronateeska Heritage Center is a renowned non-profit organization in Albany, Georgia. It is divided into three major parts: the History Museum, Wetherbee Planetarium and the Science Museum. Visit this interesting spot in the city and have an exciting day observing the solar system and participating in a dynamic learning experience in the interactive science center and museum.

The area along the Flint River that is now Albany was once known as Thronateeska by the Muskogee Native Americans. The Thronateeska Heritage Center was created in 1974, with the objective of revitalizing the city’s downtown area around the historic railroad depot. In 1975, with the efforts of this cultural organization, the 1913 Union Station depot was preserved as a legendary landmark, converted into a museum and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Find the visitor center in that same building, which is now known as Heritage Plaza.

Start with a visit to Thronateeska's Science Museum. Explore this fun and educational museum where you can learn about many different subjects, including archeology, hydrology, paleontology, physical science and much more. Enjoy its interactive, hands-on and visually engaging exhibits. Enter the museum for free or get a group together and pay the fee for a tour.

Continue your day with a visit to the interesting Wetherbee Planetarium. Find live presentations of fascinating astronomy-themed topics, watch educational films and gaze in awe at its impressive full-dome HD planetarium. The planetarium shows include exciting subjects such as black holes, planets and astronomyths, which describe the Greek myths behind named constellations. There is an admission fee, although children 3 years old or under can enter free.

Absorb Albany and Southwest Georgia’s history through the interesting collection of archives and artifacts of the South Georgia Archives at Thronateeska Heritage Center. The people working at the archives do an amazing job restoring and displaying these interesting pieces in the History and Science Museum of the center.

Find the Thronateeska Heritage Center along West Roosevelt Avenue, the only remaining brick street in the city. Generally the hours are mid-morning to afternoon from Thursday to Saturday.
