Tiberias Old City Travel Guide

Tiberias

A stone building with a staircase, surrounded by lush greenery and flowering plants.
A street market with vendors under a covered area, surrounded by buildings and pedestrians.
A wooden bridge with a stone wall, palm trees, and buildings in the background.
A street with cars, palm trees, and a building with arched windows.
A covered pedestrian walkway with shops, a bus, and a street with cars.

As St. Peter’s old fishing haven, this neighbourhood is filled with religious relics and vestiges with spectacular views of the Sea of Galilee.

A range of historic churches and museums line the narrow streets of Tiberias Old City, where Christ was said to have lived. The district lies on the western shore of the vast Sea of Galilee, a freshwater lake that is perfect for canoeing and swimming. Soak up the biblical history and follow in the footsteps of biblical figures in this intriguing Old City centre.

Enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere in St. Andrew’s Church of Scotland, Tiberias. Learn about its progressive community projects and read a scripture passage. Next door stands Saint Peter’s Church, in an area where its namesake disciple is said to have lived. See the replica here of a statue of him in the Vatican and inspect the paintings of Jesus on the Sea of Galilee.

Both churches overlook the largest freshwater lake in Israel, on which Jesus is said to have performed his most iconic miracles. Take a canoe out on the water or go for a swim to cool down on a hot afternoon. Make the most of the scorching summers with trips to the beaches alongside the lake.

Back on the winding streets of the historic centre, head to the Dona Gracia Museum to learn about Gracia Mendes Nasi, a fascinating and affluent woman in the 16th century who helped Jews escape the Inquisition. A little further inland, find one of the crowning jewels of the region in the form of the Tomb of Maimonides. Hear the legends surrounding the 13th-century philosopher said to have been initially buried here.

The district occupies the southeastern corner of Tiberias, south of Blue Beach. Drive south from the Rosh Pina Airport for 18 miles (29 kilometres) to get here in just over 30 minutes. Make sure to visit attractions in the neighboring quarters of Akhva, Haramban and Sharet.

Tiberias Old City is a well-preserved hub that provides a glimpse into life in the time of Christ.

"Lovely hotel in a beautiful location with a private beach on the Kinneret. I saw some reviews complaining about music by the pool, but it was calm music and not too loud so don't let that put you off! 10/10 and would definitely stay here again."
