Pristine beaches, Buddhist shrines and traditional fishing villages await on this Vietnamese island getaway.

Enjoy old-style charm, empty beaches and picturesque boat trips on the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc. Living up to its nickname “Pearl Island”, this gorgeous isle is characterised by shimmering coastal waters and wild, rugged forests.

Begin your visit at the island’s main town, Duong Dong. This lively city is powered by a traditional fishing industry so there are plenty of fresh seafood markets to explore. During the day, make the most of the local beaches and when the sun goes down, browse the bustling night market. Stop for a drink at one of the beachside bars and enjoy views of the extraordinary Cau Temple.

Hire a recliner and enjoy the sun at nearby Long or Ong Lang beaches. If you’d prefer to get away from the crowds, hire a motorcycle and drive north through the picturesque Phu Quoc National Park. Dirt roads lead you past the park’s stunning panoramas, through quaint villages and to some of the most beautiful, unspoiled beaches on the island. Enjoy an undisturbed swim at Rach Vem village or continue along the cape to Ganh Dau.

For further exploration, head to the island’s west coast and take a dip in the waterfalls near Ham Ninh. Spotless beaches like Bai Sao and Bai Khem stretch south along the coast forming golden crescents against the green island backdrop.

At the southernmost point of Phu Quoc, An Thoi provides opportunities for diving, snorkelling and exploring the surrounding islands. Take a daytrip out to sea and spot some of the fish, octopuses and sharks in the clear water.

Due to its undeveloped roads, Phu Quoc is best explored by motorbike, which can be rented in the island’s cities. Access Phu Quoc by ferry from Rach Gia or take a flight into Duong Dong from Saigon.
