Located within minutes of the House on the Rock Resort, the American Players Theatre, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin East, the Spring Valley Inn began as a visitor’s center designed by Taliesin and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, later developed by the current owners, John and Patricia Rasmussen, into the current Spring Valley Inn, a project overseen by Charles Montooth, apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright and member of the Taliesin Associated Architects. As a fellow academic and widow of an architectural historian specializing in modern American architecture, the authenticity of all this lovely inn’s appointments and furnishings was not lost on me. The staff was uniformly welcoming and helpful, the breakfasts tasty and substantial (and to be enjoyed in the gorgeous Pat’s Place lounge and bar, the original Taliesin visitor’s center), and the very large enclosed pool both handsome and fit for a dedicated swimmer. If world-class architecture, attention to detail, and excellent personal service in privately owned accommodations conveniently close to one of the best classical theatre companies in the U.S. AND a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site, the Spring Valley Inn is for you.
