"We recently stayed at Quinta de la Rosa for three nights, having started our holiday in Porto. We took the train from Porto, which is a lovely way to enjoy the Douro Valley.
On arrival we were able to get a taxi from outside the station and 10 minutes later were at the Quinta. Descriptions suggest this is not a hotel but rather a rustic retreat but it is carefully curated and standards are pretty high. Our suite overlooked the river and was very comfortable and quiet. There are apparently 20 rooms on site but, apart from the restaurant at breakfast or in the evening, it never felt as though there were lots of people around though people are arriving and departing all the time. It is the perfect base for a couple of days to really soak up the atmosphere of this part of the Douro Valley and a trip on the train from Pinhao to Pochino is a great way to spend a few hours as it becomes even more picturesque further along the river. There are a number of port wine houses offering tastings (Quinta das Carvalhas across the bridge in town is well worth a visit for a relaxed tasting). Pinhao itself is rather disappointing given the numbers of visitors who pass through, with facilities rather limited and few places to eat. But don't let that detract from the Quinta, which is a little oasis of calm."
