At the end of an elegant street, this interesting red brick office contains a wide range of exhibits on the history of the Hokkaidō region.

With its crimson red exterior and haunting aesthetic, the Former Hokkaidō Government Office Building is one of the most recognizable emblems of Sapporo. Dating back to 1888, the neo-baroque American structure complements its landscape gardens in the city center. Embark on a tour of this building’s exhibits to appreciate the architectural flourishes and décor.

Enjoy the views from the tree-lined street that extends in front of this mansion. Notice the impressive thick glass from the Meiji period and walk up to the large arched double portal at the center of the front. Note that the doors are remarkably thick, built to withstand the extreme cold of Sapporo’s winters. As its name suggests, the spot served as the main government building, lasting for more than 80 years.

When the facility is open, supplement your knowledge of the Hokkaidō region by exploring the exhibits in the museum that today stands inside the building. Chat with some of the volunteer staff about the building and the displays. Among the highlights are numerous paintings that depict significant events in the history of Hokkaidō. Browse the museum shop for souvenirs relating to the building and the city of Sapporo.

Outside the front of the building are gardens with a pond. Colorful plant displays include pink cherry blossoms and yellow leaves of gingko trees. Events and conferences sometimes take place in the complex.

Note that the site opens daily from morning until late afternoon. Enter the building for free during the day.

The Former Hokkaidō Government Office Building is in the southern part of the Chuo ward that marks the heart of Sapporo. Travel here by public transportation rather than a car, as this site doesn’t have a parking area for visitors. Arrive at the Sapporo train station and walk southwest for about 10 minutes to get here.

Explore the busy area for other gems such as the Sapporo Clock Tower, the Botanic Garden of Hokkaidō University and Tanukikoji Shopping Street.
