The priory was founded in 1398 and was the last monastery in Yorkshire to be established before the Reformation. According to English Heritage's guide book it was "an expression of the fashion for piety and strict living of the time... the Carthusians lived as hermits, each occupying his own cell, and coming together rarely in the church."
