The room was clean with everything in working order. Staff was top notch, friendly and accommodating. The only thing that i would say i didnt care for would be the owner, Phil lingering around every evening. He was none of the forementioned.

The service was great. Staff was very friendly and helpful. the condition of the room was old. it;s located in a very good location and very close to water.

A Trippin’ Gem
If you’re into live music, especially the Grateful Dead this is a hotel for you. If you’re not it’s still a wonderful place to enjoy the beauty of Playa Grande. It sits right on the estuary and there’s tons of wildlife and a short walk to the beach. The hotel rooms are clean and comfortable. The pool is fun. In the evenings it can get lively, but as an early bird I had no trouble sleeping. The owner and staff are friendly and helpful. I would come back in a minute.

We stayed here 3 nights & really enjoyed it. The rooms are basic but nice & clean. Staff is great, the food is amazing, & nice to have live music at night. We saw tons of wildlife in the area including a Python snake, an armadillo, & a baby turtle on the beach. Playa Grande beach is under 10 min walking distance & one of the nicest beaches I've had the pleasure to enjoy. We would absolutely recommend the Grateful Hotel & area to all visiting Costa Rica.

La atención de los muchachos es increíble, los desayunos buenísimos, las habitaciones muy limpias, el lugar muy tranquilo. Lo único que no pude usar fue la piscina ya que es demasiado alta y a un solo nivel

The hotel is so cute and is isolated so you get real sleep. Everyone was so friendly and authentically nice. The food is fantastic and the entire staff makes you feel at home, everything in the hotel is intended for your relaxation

This a amazing small hotel. The pool area amazing restaurant food was amazing. The free breakfast made to order. The staff was amazing live music was great. There is nothing I can say bad about this place. The only this that it’s not fancy room small and just enough to shower and sleep. That was all I was looking for. If your looking for a big fancy resort this place is not for your. If you are looking for a small piece a Paradise the staff makes you feel like home. Area quite not a big city area. This hotel is for you. Would stay here again

I recently book a stay at the Grateful Hotel because it was one of the few places available on fairly short notice. I would have preferred to stay at the nearby Hotel Cantarana or El Manglar, both of which are about half the price. Truth be told, the whole Grateful Dead theme was specifically NOT why I booked, but I was willing to overlook the over-the-top décor, especially if the live music lived up to the hype (which it didn’t, except for one brief gig by a reggae artist). I got blinded by the rave reviews and didn’t see that the hotel was rated at 2.5 stars. And that is what it should be rated. Ants in the bed, a rotating bathroom sink (that had no water on my second day), lighting so bad I had to use the flashlight on my phone to see anything at night on one side of the room. And the service at the restaurant was some of the very worst I have experienced. Food to go taking an hour and 15 minutes. Being asked again what you would like to order 20 minutes after placing an order. Food sitting so long it would get cold or soggy. The staff was very nice and seemed to be working hard, but they didn’t know what they were doing. That being said, the Filet mignon steak with the au poivre sauce was excellent. There were some die-hard deadheads there that seemed to enjoy the whole vibe. It’s admittedly not for everyone. Bottom line: way over-priced. Plan ahead and book the afore-mentioned two places. I ended up biting the bullet and rescheduling the whole last week of my stay.

Beautiful property with great food, drinks, music, ambiance, pool and location. Phil is a great host and the staff are friendly and helpful. A very welcoming vibe here and the Grateful Dead art around the property is incredible!
