Feel the beating heart of New Delhi as you shop in boutiques, snack at street food stalls or simply watch the urban rush in this business and commercial hub.

Find high-fashion boutiques alongside local textile stalls, and street food traders next to Starbucks in Connaught Place. Known locally as Rajiv Chowk, this central business plaza embodies the hybrid nature of modern New Delhi: suited businessmen drinking at shack-like coffee stands are a common sight.

This hub of modern commerce was built on the former location of the headquarters of the British Raj in 1933. Its local name derives from Rajiv Gandhi, who was the Indian Prime Minister when the inner circle of the plaza was reconstructed. Admire the grounds while enjoying a piping hot coffee.

The plaza itself comprises an expansive circular ring road around a central park. Offices and shops occupy the street space. Take note of the company names on these buildings they are among the biggest and most powerful firms in the country.

The park brings pleasing greenery to this bustling urban environment. Take a leisurely stroll across its lawns and pick up a tasty snack at a street food stall. In the centre, you’ll be able to see a flag pole, which once displayed the British Flag and today proudly flies the Indian colours.

Head to the shopping centre to find an eclectic mix of brands, fashions and accessories from around the world. In the upper levels, brand-name boutiques offer good prices on Western-style fashion. Venture downstairs to the air-conditioned Palika Bazar, where a maze of stalls sell inexpensive Indian-made goods including textiles and jewellery. Be sure to haggle for the best price.

Many people come to Connaught Place for the wide range of dining options. Try local vegetarian dishes from street vendors, eat a tasty burger in the food court or sample fried pastries with spiced fillings.

Connaught Place is a focal point of New Delhi, with main roads radiating in every direction from its centre. To get here, ride the metro to Rajiv Chowk station or use bus services.
