I travel enough to know within minutes when a hotel is not it. Unfortunately, thanks to Expedia, we were locked in.
Room #1: no hot water. At all. Cool cool cool.
We switch rooms.
Room #2: immediately notice the carpet, which looks dirty overall but also appears to have what genuinely looks like period blood on it. Not a shadow. Not a pattern. A stain that makes you pause and reconsider your life choices.
The pull-out couch for my daughter deserves its own paragraph. In the first room, the couch cushions were so worn down they were maybe an inch thick—like sitting on compressed regret. In the second room, the couch was slightly better, but nothing was stocked. No sheets. No blankets. No pillows. Had to go to the front desk to ask for the basics that are normally… in the room.
Evening rolls around and we think, “Let’s salvage this with the pool.” Nope. The outdoor hot tub had at least six inches of foam from kids who had clearly been marinating in it for hours. We turned around and went back to the room where I had to convince my daughter to take a bath instead, which felt ironic given the earlier hot-water situation.
Now for bedtime—the main event.
The bathroom fan sounds like a plane taking off. Then, while you’re sitting on the toilet, it begins making random, unpredictable noises that genuinely make you wonder who engineered this thing and whether they were okay at the time.
