I read all the reviews before staying at St. Mark's Hotel. It is important that you read them as well, so you go into this location understanding what you are getting for your money.
This is a building constructed in the 1830s as a rooming house, that was repurposed as a hotel 30 years ago.
Staff are very friendly, and they keep the building very clean, but it is a bare bones Hotel that serves a definite purpose.
I was looking for a location to stay that was in a safer area of New York, with good access to transportation, and was affordable. This was exactly that.
Located directly above a fantastic pizza and bagel location, St. Mark's Hotel offers you a room, with a bed, television, Wi-Fi, and bathroom with shower. Nothing more.
When I left each morning there was a gentleman mopping the stairs to keep them clean, and when I returned late at night my room was always well managed.
You are very close to the entry points for two main subway lines in the city, and bus access.
You can literally get anywhere in the city from those starting points, so this location is perfect. You are also located across the street from a 24-hour drug store, and an area with numerous and unique shops.
It is important to note that there is no elevator in this hotel, and you will navigate stairs even to get to the first floor of rooms.
I spent 5 days using this as nothing more than a place to sleep at night, in a safer area of New York (East Village).
Be aware that you must pay cash
