Learn more about Porthleven

This picturesque harbour town invites you to watch fishing boats unload their catch while enjoying fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants. Explore the iconic clock tower and granite pier, or time your visit for the annual food festival celebrating Cornwall's culinary treasures.

Porthleven is a picturesque Cornish fishing village, located on the south coast 10 mins from Helston (by car). This is a great place to stay for a few days, there's loads to do, lots of great food & beer and some fantastic photograph locations. Porthleven has plenty of accommodation but booking early is essential, there is also a campsite 5mins walk from the village centre. There are loads of great restaurants & pubs with a plentiful supply of coffee shops, not forgetting the 'Horse & Jockey' pasty shop, a beef skirt rough puff pasty is my favourite, especially washed down with a pint of 'Proper Job' from the Harbour Inn. One of my favourite places to eat would have to be the 'Ship Inn', really very good food, lovely sea food and some good vegetarian options also. Roaring log fire in winter for those cold drizzly days. Places to photograph - The Clock Tower is probably the most famous landmark to take an image of, especially during a S.W. Storm, waves frequently reach the top of the tower, how it's still standing pays testament to its builders (they don't build them like that these days). At the end of the pier is good for surfers out on the reef, you'll need a long lens at least 400mm. Between Porthleven and Helston, there is a National Trust area called 'Penrose Estate', this is a great place to walk, it has forest, open pasture, beach front and lakeside views (I'll be posting a separate description about Penrose) at a later date. One thing to note - During the English school summer holidays, Porthleven can get extremely busy.
