The winding streets at the heart of Singapore’s Indian community are full of intriguing smells, sounds and colours.

At the heart of Singapore’s large Indian community is Little India, the area surrounding Serangoon Road to the east of the Singapore River. While Little India is a popular destination for tourists, it hasn’t lost its authenticity, and it still functions as a trade centre. See vendors selling their wares on the side of the road, vibrant colored flowers and a winding series of alleys that traverse the district. While many visit Little India regularly for the classic Indian curries available, the area is a great destination for those with an interest in history and the Indian culture.

Stroll down Serangoon Road and immerse yourself in the South Indian culture that centres itself there. Smell brightly colored flowers that adorn the sides of the streets as you admire the traditional architecture of the buildings. Little India is home to a number of sacred temples, but the best known is Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. Take your shoes off and head inside for a peaceful escape from the busy street outside.

Shop for souvenirs or traditional food products at the Tekka Market, a true sensory experience. While the market is usually filled to capacity, it is a great place to sample the atmosphere of Little India the colours and aromas are unlike anywhere else in the area.

Try spicy curries or a local variation of Indian chai, known as tarik, from the local restaurants or street vendors. Curries here are authentically spicy, so be sure to speak up if you don’t want yours too hot.

Little India is located in the central downtown district of Singapore, on the east side of the Singapore River. It can be easily reached on foot from many downtown hotels, but is also served by the Little India MRT station. Free parking in the area is limited but for a fee parking is ample. Little India can be visited daily and there is no cost involved.
