Charming 15th c. Inn with more than adequate updates. Very comfortable room, parking, restaurant offering extraordinary portions of delicious fish and chips. In center of St. Albans across from cathedral. Helpful staff! Call ahead if you need accommodations for climbing stairs, etc.

This is a very old coaching inn right in the centre of St Alban's! It's not that big but it's great and the staff are brilliant

This fifteenth century hotel's walls, ceilings and floors are very uneven and the stairways and passages are narrow. We enjoyed it but some may find it challenging. Directly opposite the cathedral, it was ideal for our daughter's graduation. It's an easy walk to shops and restaurants. Breakfast and dinner were good and there's a friendly bar. The rooms, bedroom furniture and showers need updating but the staff were hard working and friendly. On the whole it was an enjoyable convenient stay and a refreshing change from boring chains.

Staff were friendly, and room was very nice... food was excellent.. Problem we had was in the heatwave we only had a small fan, which could not keep up with cooling the room, so was a very sweaty night... And the stairs to Room C2 was very steep, which was a problem for the wife with a not so good knee. Parking on the property was a bonus, but could get full very quickly..... Hotel is close to everywhere which was fantastic. We asked / booked for 2 nights, but seems Hotels.com somehow only booked us for 1 night, seeing as it was our 45th Anniversary, well that got spoilt as we had to leave..

Free parking was an asset to the property, While I appreciate the property was very old, the room was dusty in places and furniture dated and not able to open drawers as they were stuck . Rug on floor was dangerous as an edge was permanently curled up causing a trip hazard. Carpet was very worn throughout the building and the en-suite bathroom very small and mould present in showers grout in many places.Our room faced the busy road, cars and Lorries constantly used the road, sadly with lack of window glazing (which may be unavoidable with such an old building) , it made sleep difficult and broken. I had a very poor sleep that night. The bed mattress was too small for the bed frame so left a gap which you could knock against when getting up . The staff were polite and helpful. Personally I would not stay here again and felt it was expensive for what we had in the room and the quality of sleep I had.

If you’re in England I can’t imagine staying in a Holiday Inn on the outskirts of town when you could be in the heart of a 2,000 year old city, can cross the street and get an excellent meal or coffee, and see amazing architecture like the St Albans Abbey/Cathedral less than 200 metres from the door step of this historic 470 year old hotel that has seen it all and dripping in character and charm. It was about the hottest day of the year at 35 degrees but the staff had a fan going and I had two windows to open up. Whoever owns it cares about doing upgrades properly and if that British standard can continue the world will be better for it. I only wish I had been staying longer.
