Haleakala Crater, now a dormant volcano, completely dominates the landscape of east of Maui. The spectacular desolation of its enormous crater valley- 7.5 miles long, 2.5 miles wide and 3,000 ft deep has been compared to the mountains of the moon. Pastel hues of red, yellow, orange as well as gray purple brown black and pink accent cliff sides and cinder cones.its worth waking up in the dark of early morning to drive from beach front resort and watch the sunrise over Haleakala 10,023 foot summit.

On the back side of Ka'uiki Hill in Hana, Red Sand (Kaihalulu) Beach is just a five minute hike, but steep drop offs and loose gravel from this cinder cone make it a treacherous trip. Not for the faint of heart or perpetually clumsy, but daring adventurers are rewarded with dramatic red cliffs and a cerulean blue cove providing a sheltered swimming area.

Found this beauty while exploring the back roads of Haiku in upcountry Maui. With lush green pastures, rolling hills and towering eucalyptus trees, you are worlds away from the sand and surf that most people associate with the island. No wonder Oprah comes here to get away from it all!
