"The room was spotless and a lot of thought in the details. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. "What stood out??? Well, for one, it was the staff. They welcomed me and gave me a lovely room. I had a table booked for 10 of my family, and the food was excellent. The wine was superb too, and I asked for a favour, which they delivered. This is one of my favourite hotels in the UK and will be my go-to whenever I go to Somerset to see my family. The only downside is the parking, but that is minuscule compared to the service I received from The Ancient Gatehouse. Well done all. "

Manor Farmhouse - Trent Grade II listed detached farmhouse, dated 1660, with a range to the rear of the C18, and with C20 restoration. The owner told me the main property was originally thatched, as many such houses were, traces of which were found in the roof void (note the parapet at the gable ends to contain the thatch). In more recent times, the thatch was replaced with Welsh slates, the stone tiles at the bottom of the roof being retained. Stone tiles were mostly used here in Dorset just at the eaves, where the load bearing supporting walls could take their weight.
