We booked Hotel Bardo specifically because we loved the boutique jungle aesthetic and wanted a calm, immersive Tulum experience. Unfortunately, the reality of our stay fell far short of the hotel’s advertised 4-star positioning.
While the property photographs beautifully, several core operational and comfort issues materially impacted our stay:
• Air conditioning struggled to cool the room effectively in Tulum heat and blasted directly over the bed throughout the night
• Water from the outdoor shower flooded directly into the room
• The door lock functioned poorly and unreliably
• Lighting throughout the room was so limited that we repeatedly stubbed our toes on furniture at night
• Multiple concerns raised with reception during the stay were not meaningfully resolved
To be fair, the General Manager did eventually engage with us after we had already checked out early and acknowledged several of the operational issues we experienced. However, despite assuring us they would cooperate with Expedia regarding our case, the hotel ultimately refused to approve a refund for the two unused nights after we were forced to relocate to another property.
That outcome felt extremely disappointing and unprofessional, particularly given the hotel’s own acknowledgement that some of the issues were operational matters that should have functioned properly.
This review is not about disliking the “jungle concept” or boutique atmosphere — we intentionally chose the property for that reason. The
