See preserved relics from the American Revolutionary War and visit restored colonial buildings from a bygone era in this special location.

Washington Crossing is a charming village on the site of a dramatic moment in the American Revolutionary War. Its historic park features fascinating relics relating to the moment George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River in a surprise attack. Travel to the various sights to learn about the location’s importance in U.S. history.

Spot the stone marker that commemorates the river crossing. It was placed here in 1895, before becoming part of Washington Crossing Historic Park in 1918. Stroll through the pleasant fields and woodland patches of this 500-acre (200-hectare) park. Snap photos of the scenic Delaware River, with an impressive bridge in the background.

Sit by the river and think about the historic moment that took place here. On Christmas Day in 1776, George Washington led the Continental Army across the freezing river on the way to Trenton, New Jersey, where they surprised the troops of German Colonel Johann Rall.

Piece together some of the history through visits to the restored colonial buildings dotted throughout the park, including the Thompson-Neely House and the McConkey Ferry Inn. Other historical sights are Bowman’s Hill Tower and the graves of fallen soldiers from the Revolutionary War.

Stroll through the heart of the quaint village of Washington Crossing and enjoy a meal at a local pizzeria. Browse the items on display in the locally owned boutiques. Visit the town on Christmas Day to see the magnificent reenactment of the Washington Crossing of the Delaware River.

Note that the village was formerly known as Taylorsville, before changing to its current name in order to honour the 18th-century event.

The village is on the bend of the Delaware River that runs along the New Jersey border on the eastern flank of Pennsylvania. It is in Bucks County, a little northwest of the city of Trenton. Arrive at Philadelphia International Airport and drive northeast for 40 miles (60 kilometres) to get here.

Washington Crossing is a village that marks one of the most momentous occasions of the early development of the United States.
