"The property was very well maintained. We enjoyed the pool and swim up bar. The food was very good, but not much variety unfortunately. The staff itself was amazing, very friendly and helpful! Our room was very clean and comfortable. The AC was perfect! The fridge was stocked with beer and soda. The only negative thing would be the sargassum (sea weed). They have no control over it. The smell (rotten eggs) was very hard to get used to at first, but we eventually got used to it. Don’t plan on going to the beach directly in front of the property. I would definitely go back again because the resort was very comfortable and the staff was so great! You also have a view of the coral reef and boat shuttles that take you to San Pedro several times a day for other excursions. There are also golf carts for rent that you can drive to go to Secret Beach to get your beach fix."

"The property and surrounding area is absolutely beautiful! The staff is very friendly and helpful. The only downside is the distance from the town of San Pedro. Ten miles is a lot when the mode of transportation is a golf cart and the road is bumpy and dusty. However, if you’re looking to get away from the town and just have a relaxing trip, there is no place better than Sapphire Beach Resort."
Portofino Beach Resort

"Portofino is a beautiful, quaint little resort. We have stayed in their small cabanas a number of times. They are rustic and simple. The resort grounds include a lovely salt water pool, a dock, a small reception area, a small outdoor bar with a beautiful patio under large sea grape trees as well as a restaurant above the reception area that overlooks the gorgeous sea and barrier reef. Overall, it is simply beautiful and relaxing. The frontline staff are phenomenal, truly great and caring human beings. They really make the stay very special. This July 2026 stay, however, we experienced a few disappointments in comparison to past stays. The restaurant food was not as good overall as we have experienced in the past. Most disappointing in respect to the amenities was the removal of the water taxi as an option for going into San Pedro or to other resorts. We were truly saddened not to have that available given how far Portofino is from the city. The biggest challenge, though, was the lack of available beach front and ocean water. While not a reflection on the resort itself, the large amount of seagassum was disgusting and the smell sickening. Sadly, it extended out past the end of the dock."

"The staff at the hotel are outstanding, super helpful, and Norman in particular is a real all-star. The main issue is something pretty outside their control: the beach outside the hotel is covered with a giant mass of stinking seaweed. This plagues just about all places in the area, but everyone traveling there should be aware that this is an issue. But the staff are awesome. They cook us a lovely breakfast every morning and they show us beaches on other parts of the island. Well done Norman!"

"the resort was beautiful. loved the pool the kitchen was very nice .very clean. Eiden was very nice and helpful...activity director Karen was awsome and very helpful . making sure all our activities were set up. due to mother nature the beach was not available but there were other beaches near by. karen booked us a tour to check out the Mayan ruins and cave tubing with lunch included. we had an awsome time.....Eddy and Mike {tour guides} were really cool and made sure everyone was comfortable and was having a great time ,they also were very knowledgeable"

"So important! In order to reach the resort you either need to take a water taxi ride which requires a taxi from the airport. Or if you don’t want to take an almost two hour boat ride to the island of San Pedro you can take a puddle jumper. I’m not sure if they are right there at the airport since we took the water taxi. Second once you get to San Pedro you need a golf cart. If you contact Mangata before your arrival date, Jennifer the owner will be happy help assist with setting up things you need in advance. Mangata Inns/Moon Barwas absolutely perfect for our anniversary trip. Once we got there by golf cart Jennifer and her husband and fellow proprietor introduced themselves while we sipped on our “welcome drinks”. They personally showed us to our own personal casita with a nice large king sized bed, kitchenette, bathroom with double sinks, shower and small sitting area with table and chairs for two all tastefully decorated and updated nicely. Jennifer has a book put together with all kinds of helpful information including nearby restaurants and which are their personal favorites, things to do on the island, a “how to” section for the safe and the tv, and misc item. When your driving your golf cart the 6.5 miles to Mangata you may think you picked someplace to far out. Wrong. It’s nicely placed on the north end near excellent restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, and most importantly Secret Beach!!! Jennifer and Justin do so much to ensure you have an excellent stay.❤️"
