Búzios is a picturesque resort town adorned with seemingly countless sandy beaches and verdant, rocky outcrops. As it’s a popular destination for residents of Rio de Janeiro, the town has many holiday lodgings, bars and clubs. Stroll through the quaint alleys of the town centre and stop to admire picturesque spots such as Sant’Anna Church and Santos Dumont Square. Walk along the Orla Bardot promenade, named after French actress and singer Brigitte Bardot. Bardot was responsible for bringing the town to international attention after she visited with her Brazilian boyfriend in 1964.
Enjoy perfect tranquility as you work on your tan at one of the area’s stunning beaches. Among the main strands are Geriba Beach, Canto Beach and Ferradurinha Beach. Make use of the strong winds to go sailing by Manguinhos Beach or Ossos Beach. The latter is where whaling was practiced in the early 1700s.
For a change of scenery, wander along the woodland trails that meander through the exotic vegetation of the Reserva Serra das Emerências. Experience utter peace and quiet on the reserve’s Tucuns Beach, named for the type of palm trees found on it.
Make your way southwest to the colonial gem of Cabo Frio, less than an hour away by car. Clamber over the shifting sand dunes of Dunas Beach and Forte Beach. The latter has a rocky outcrop holding the São Mateus Fort, among the oldest colonial structures in the region.
Búzios is located in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the southeastern part of Brazil. Arrive at the Rio de Janeiro International Airport and drive east to get here in just under 3 hours. Alternatively, take a long-distance bus from one of the tour operators in Rio de Janeiro. Note that the town is particularly popular in December, when Brazilian students have holiday time and the weather is fairly dry and hot.
