Avania Inn of Santa Barbara

"Upon arrival we were a little concerned. The outside of the building looked a little dated and worn. Stepping inside the lobby it was nothing fancy, but it was clean and well maintained. They had a complementary coffee machine with a variety of choices and cookies to go with it. Heading up to the room on the 3rd floor we were still a little worried about what we would find. Opening the door we were pleasantly surprised! The room was clean and well maintained! You can tell it’s an older property, but it’s been nicely renovated. The bed was comfortable, the a/c worked great, and the water pressure in the shower was good! The following morning they offered a very light breakfast snack of oatmeal and some pastries with orange juice and the above mentioned coffee machine. The old real downside was the pool and hot tub. It’s a very small area and while the pool water was clear, the hot tub looked a bit off. The area itself could use a little love to make it more inviting. With all that said, it’s a solid property, great staff, close to the water and restaurants. We would not hesitate to stay there again!"

The Upham Hotel

"The Upham is located close to various sites in urban Santa Barbara; it is bit further to the beach and harbor. The property consists of several buildings with a variety of room types for rent. There are also several, pleasant seating areas both outside and inside the main building where reception is. I stayed in a room in the building (Lincoln?) directly behind the main reception building and restaurant. The room was spacious with a comfortable bed. It did have a musty smell, so I requested a room fan (provided). I alerted staff the next day that my air conditioner wasn't working properly, so hopefully that was addressed. Fortunately, my windows could be opened, and it was cool enough to not be a problem. My room was on the ground floor directly behind the kitchen and seating area for the restaurant. As such, it was a bit smelly back there, and there was noise from the restaurant and kitchen from late afternoon until later in the evening. This wasn't too bad, but just be aware. It definitely was quiet enough during the night, as I did sleep well once the restaurant wound down operations for the night. There is a light continental breakfast provided, as well as wine in the evening. There is limited parking behind the property, so it's advisable to park and never use your car if possible. I can recommend this property as a reasonable place to stay in Santa Barbara."
