"I booked a Mother’s Day weekend at Southernmost Hotel expecting a relaxing getaway, and instead walked into a room that smelled heavily of mold not mild humidity, but an intense toxic mold odor mixed with what smelled like Clorox trying to cover it up. The smell was so strong that within minutes my asthma started acting up.
Given the hurricane damage Key West has had over the years, it honestly felt like the property was never properly remediated and that they’re masking the issue instead of fixing it. If you can physically smell mold that strongly, you are breathing it in.
I immediately complained and was offered a “$70 upgrade.” The upgraded room still smelled moldy too, just slightly less intense, so essentially I paid extra to breathe in less mold. That is not an upgrade.
Then came the roaches. The next morning I found a roach in the room, which was disgusting enough, but on my LAST NIGHT I found TWO MORE roaches in the room. At that point I was horrified. Mold, asthma triggers, and roaches crawling around a room costing over $700 a night is absolutely unacceptable.
Dirty hallways, worn-down conditions, and visible lack of cleanliness everywhere this hotel has seriously declined. I used to love staying here before COVID, but now it feels neglected, dirty, and poorly maintained.
I left my clean home for a relaxing getaway and ended up stuck in a moldy hotel room dealing with asthma flare-ups and roaches instead.
