See the picturesque views from the top of this historic fort and join local residents for a relaxed afternoon on the beach below.

Fort Montagu is the oldest of three forts in New Providence. Climb the stone staircase to the upper level of the fort to see beautiful views over the harbour. The fort overlooks Montagu Bay Beach, a popular spot for locals to enjoy their lunch break. Purchase a drink from one of the vendors clustered along the beachfront promenade and go for a walk in the adjacent park.

Building on the fort began in 1741 on the site of an earlier structure, in order to defend the British-occupied territory from Spanish invaders. Constructed from local limestone, the fort included a guard room, powder magazine and rainwater cistern, as well as barracks for officers and soldiers. The only action the fort saw was the famous first military attack by the Continental Marines which fostered the United States Marine Corps. Seeking military supplies for the American Revolution, Esek Hopkins captured the fort in 1776 only to find that the British governor had spirited away most of the gunpowder stored there. Visit here today to see the ruins of the fort.

Walk up the stone staircase to the upper level of the fort, where you’ll find several interesting weathered cannons. Enjoy the excellent views of Nassau Harbour, over which the fort once stood guard.

Relax on Montagu Bay Beach below, a popular spot for locals to wade in the water or picnic in the sands. The bay is the site of regular yacht regattas and Bahamian sloop races. The beach is often quite busy on weekends and holidays, with locals enjoying cookouts and festivities.

Purchase fresh seafood and produce at markets across the street, where you can pick up shrimp, grouper, lobster, snapper and other fresh fish. Visit a pleasant park with a children’s playground, well-manicured green lawns and plenty of spots to relax in the shade.

Find Fort Montagu is about 2 miles (3.5 kilometres) away from Rawson Square along the waterfront. Reach the area by bus or on foot from Nassau’s city centre. Admission is free.
