Karlstejn Castle

Karlstejn Castle which includes a small town or village, forest scenes and château or palace

Peek inside opulent royal salons, see replicas of jeweled crowns and enjoy views of the Central Bohemia countryside at this enchanting medieval castle.

Walk in the footsteps of Czech kings at the fairytale-like Karlštejn Castle (Hrad Karlštejn). Glimpse inside lavishly decorated chapels, rooms and palaces. Admire displays of antique art and views from a 197-foot-tall (60-metre) tower. Karlštejn Castle commands a magnificent setting on a hilltop overlooking the Berounka River and rolling green countryside.

Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, established the castle in 1348 as a place to safeguard royal treasures. Although altered over the years, today it showcases its original medieval style. Note the impressive stepped layout of the buildings, with the highest structure being the most important.

To see the castle’s interiors, join a guided tour. One tour takes you on a journey through the Imperial Palace and the lower floor of the Marian Tower. See the well-appointed rooms of Charles IV, a small chapel and the castle’s former prison. Spot wall paintings that date back to the 14th century and a replica of the Czech coronation crown in the Treasure and Jewels Hall.

Check for availability of a second tour passing through the castle’s towers to its most sacred areas, including a church and former sacristy. Marvel at a series of more than 100 paintings by Gothic artist Master Theodoric. They decorate the Chapel of the Holy Cross. In a library see an exhibit about the castle’s last reconstruction, carried out near the end of the 19th century.

Don’t miss the tour of the imposing Great Tower. From here you’ll be rewarded with uninterrupted views of nearby villages, vineyards and woodland.

The castle is located in the village of Karlštejn, which is about a 40-minute train ride from Prague. From Karlštejn station, walk uphill to the castle’s entrance via a pedestrian-only street lined with cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops. The walk offers some of the best views and photo opportunities of the castle’s exterior.

Karlštejn Castle’s opening hours and tour schedule vary throughout the year so check its official website for more information. Tours are available in English and can be booked online.
