Learn the secrets of the production of one of Taiwan’s most well-known soy sauce brands on a tour of this factory museum.
Kimlan Foods Museum (also known as Kimlan Soy Sauce Museum) is dedicated to the history and manufacturing of the soy sauces made by the Kimlan food company. Follow a chronological exhibition that takes you on a journey through the foundation, evolution and present-day activities of the company.
Established in 1936, when Taiwan was a colony of Japan, Kimlan is a leading producer of soy sauce and distributes to all corners of the globe. The founders extensively researched Chinese and Japanese techniques to develop an innovative brewing process. Today there are many varieties of soy sauce in addition to fermented rice, pickled foods and vinegars created under the Kimlan brand
Two giant bottles of soy sauce welcome you to the factory. Inside, exhibits highlight the changes that have taken place from the earliest days of production to the period following Japanese rule and the introduction of modern equipment. Other displays provide information about the ingredients of sauces and how and where they are sourced.
Enjoy the opportunity to taste products such as a zero-preservative soy sauce and a fermented rice, made using natural enzymes. See how it’s possible to make soap from the pulp produced during the brewing of soy sauce. Visitors of all ages will have fun designing labels and decorating sauce bottles. Finish your tour at the shop, where you can purchase sauces to take home.
Located in the Daxi District, the museum is about 6 miles (10 kilometers) south of Taoyuan City Centre. You can get here by taking a public bus from Taoyuan Station, which has a journey time of an hour. There’s a small parking area outside the entrance to the factory. The Bade Pond Ecological Park and Daxi Riverside Park are some nearby places worth visiting.
Kimlan Foods Museum is open daily and there’s an admission fee. Tours are held daily.
