Very attentive staff, good base for exploring to local area, a good blend of ancient hospitality with modern facilities. Excellent traditional food for breakfast.
Amazing town to visit - this ryokan is not the most convenient to station but it’s definitely one of the largest in the area. Wonderful Japanese style accom experience and yummy yummy food. Highly recommend.
Lovely staff. Very good food but expensive rooms are small so feel like reading etc needs to be done downstairs. However for one night on the nakasendo trail this hotel is very near the station and an ideal spot to stay

Liked: Staff & service
Disliked: Cleanliness
Our bathroom (in the room) was not clean, with someone's hair, etc. Futons are not very comfortable. Strong smell of smoke in the lobby (not in the room). No wi-fi in the room. Also, breakfast is beautifully served but not tasty (many sour and marinated dishes, but too few fresh foods, egg or meat-based products). If you come to breakfast at 8 am (not 7 am), the buffet is often empty and they do not add food to it, so you have fewer options. The staff is friendly. The location is in the new part of Kiso town, so it is an urban hotel. We could hear cars on the street from our room at night, though not too many. But the old town is nearby by foot, and it is convinient to access other sightseeing from Kiso by car. Onsen has two baths, one inside and one outside. The inside one has a strong smell of must, mold and mildew. The outside bath was way too hot on one of the evenings (noone could get in), but next day the temperature was normal and we could use it.
