The room is very small especially the bath room, hard to move around. The wall is thin, can hear next room talking louder. But the location is really good. Walkable distance to otaru station, Otaru canal. Front staff is nice too. Help us to make a phone call to my next hotel in Niseko.

There is good customer service, but overall, the stay was average. There are multiple buildings for different rooms and it wasn't clear to many of the guests which building was theirs or how to even enter the hotel. The hotel was alright, but there was nothing outstanding about it. There is a soup curry restaurant on the first floor of one of the hotel buildings, but no free breakfast/dinner. The bathrooms are really small and the pillows are really lumpy. The fridge wasn't on and you had to turn it on yourself. There was no sign that even said you had to turn it on.

Very good location abt 5min walk from Otaru Station, near to Otaru Canal, bus to Tenguyama and Sakaimachi, basically near to everything.Breakfast is good and value for money, staff is courteous and helpful.

Close to the train station. The price that we paid during the winter snow festival season is quite cheap. However, there is a little unpleasant smell in the toilet, and the hotel has changed name to “The Green” - so it can be misleading to find the “Smile Hotel”

It is near to the otaru canal and otaru harbour. You may also walk to the music box musuem. It took only 20 minutes. For me, it is very convenient.

Great family room in a great location.
Loved this place. We were in a tatami room. Fit 4 people comfortably. All amenities provided and the room was clean and well maintained. Big venue but check in was quick and efficient. Good proximity to the train station as well as local attractions. Loved it.

Even though a little dated the room was really clean. Plenty of room for 4 people and bags, ski gear etc. Breakfast in the restaurant across the road was really, really good. Hotel is in a good location. Easy walk to the station, the canal area and restaurants nearby. Staff didn’t speak much English but seemed very friendly and were as helpful as they could be.

The Green Otaru review
The dormitory rooms at The Green Otaru also included a housekeeping service. The rooms were clean and allowed for ample privacy. The hostel is close to the JR station and walking distance to the canal.

Simply very bad hotel
This was my first night in Hokkaido and first stay in Smile hotel. Front desk gave me the impression of a bad mood. My room was ridiculous, there were a desk and chair but room was too small to sit in a chair. I won't stay in Smile hotel again unless there is no other choice.

Underwhelming but Good Location
Very much like a capsule but without the privacy. Hard to rate, nothing really wrong but no atmosphere at all in the dorm. Maybe main hotel more personable. Price reasonable.

I think that you generally get what you pay for, and at this, Smile Hotel Otaru more than meets the expectation. It has a splendid location (just 3-5 minutes away from Otaru Station), a friendly receptionist/check in staff, and a spacious communal lobby - free drinks and coffee are provided, although we didn’t know how to use the coffee machine and didn’t bother asking for help. The room which I was in has a pretty comfortable bed and space. Toilet, though, is tiny and feels cramped. The thing that could be further improved on is the cleanliness of the room - we found nooks and crannies filled with dust - it seemed like places that are not immediately visible are skipped in the cleaning process.

Hidden gem in Otaru
Very decent place to stay. Considering the location feel that it is reasonably priced. Building and rooms are a little old but very comfortable. Conveniently located nearby Otaru Canal, eateries and shopping mall. Very pleasant stay.

Staff were rude and unfriendly. Using mobile while doing my check in. Unable to give proper instruction on how to access to the annex block. Kept our car keys and we dont know why. No explaination given.
