After walking along the peninsula to see its historic sites, rest and relax at this town’s spa that channels Lake Garda’s hot springs.

Among the highlights of Lake Garda, Sirmione is a medieval wonder with a castle and many churches. See its intriguing archeological site and thermal springs. Stroll through the quaint historic center to imagine life around the lake as it was centuries ago.

The Old Town area is on the Sirmio Peninsula jutting into the lake, offering picturesque panoramic views. On the northern tip of this land lie the ruins of the Grotto of Catullus. Capture photos of the dramatic scenery of the lake as a backdrop to the surviving vestiges of the Roman villa. Visit the site’s museum to learn about the structure.

On the same peninsula is the iconic Scaliger Castle, surrounded by water. Learn about its history as a fortification to defend Verona. Gaze up at its corner towers and cross the drawbridge to enter the castle to explore its museum.

Notice the lovely religious structures, such as the 8th-century Church of San Pietro. The 15th-century Santa Maria Maggiore is another iconic church nearby.

In addition to its castles and Roman ruins, Sirmione has thermal springs. Luxuriate in the Aquaria Spa and Wellness Center, which channels pools of warm water from the lake’s springs. The retreat offers massages, training exercises and a freshwater pool.

The area has a pleasant climate, with long, hot summer days and a refreshing breeze that encourages windsurfers. Winters are mild and sunny.

The commune is between the towns of Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera del Garda on the southern shoreline of Lake Garda. It is part of the Brescia province in the region of Lombardy in northern Italy. Fly to Verona Villafranca Airport, which is just 22 miles (35 kilometers) east of town. Reach other towns of Lake Garda via boats from the jetty at the town’s port.

The castles and churches of Sirmione transport you back in time, while the hot springs ensure your trip offers plenty of relaxation.

Sirmione and Hotel Eden are excellent for a relaxing holiday. Stroll around, stop and read a book, have a drink occasionally. Every restaurant we used was a good standard - although the menus were repetitive from one to another.
