Visit the Greek island of Corfu, with miles of picturesque coastline and countryside, pretty villages, traditional taverns and Byzantine architecture.

Corfu is one of Greece’s island treasures, famous for its sweeping coastline, mountain landscapes, historic architecture, sleepy villages and cultural centers. Explore this part of the Ionian Islands, a collection of islands off the west coast of mainland Greece.

Find a fusion of British, French, Greek and Italian influences in Kerkira (Corfu Town), the scenic island’s cultural heart. Look for the British neoclassical Palace of St. Michael and George and the Venetian-style Old Fortress. Admire the arcaded mansions along Liston Promenade and spot Asian art and antiques at the Museum of Asian Art. Visit nearby Gastouri and marvel at the Achilleion, a majestic palace set amid cypress and myrtle trees.

An hour’s drive north of Kerkira, the northeast coast is home to family-friendly towns such as Barbati Beach and Kalami Bay. Rent gear to snorkel or scuba dive in the Ionian Sea. Nearby, visit Corfu’s highest mountain, the 2,927-foot (906-metre) Mount Pantokrator. Hike or drive to the summit for unbeatable views of Corfu and mainland Greece.

On the northwestern shore, find beaches with postcard-perfect backdrops. Canal d’Amour is one of Corfu’s natural wonders, with cliffs and caves along small beaches. Enjoy the island’s best sunsets over the rugged shoreline of Sunset Beach. From Arillas Beach and past Pelekas Beach, glorious stretches of beaches run along the west coast. Don’t miss a tour of the ancient Paleokastritsa Monastery, set on a hilltop above Paleokastritsa Beach.

Explore the peaceful countryside of the island’s interior, with traditional villages surrounded by scenic olive groves. Chat with friendly locals in the taverns of Skripero. Ride on horseback through woodlands and vineyards above Ano Korakiana. In the island’s far south, Kavos attracts a young crowd with its nightlife and high-energy water sports.

Reach Corfu by flying or catching a ferry to Kerkira. Get around the island using a rented car or moped. Presenting an interesting mix of coastline, countryside and culture, Corfu is a popular destination for couples, families and honeymooners.

The hotel and where it is we couldn’t fault but Corfu itself seems to be struggling financially and there are a lot of derelict buildings on the route to the hotel. Shame really as I’m sure it used to be thriving. We would definitely go back though
