A multi-level shopping mall with ornate architecture, including arched windows and a central staircase.
A modern shopping area with a glass-roofed atrium and a staircase leading to an upper level.
A historic red brick building with arched windows and decorative towers.

Based around an expansive central square, this lively quarter showcases performing arts venues, fascinating museums and countless bars and nightclubs.

A short distance away from the university scene, the Leeds City Centre is a thriving cultural hub full of theatres and galleries. Alongside the myriad museums and churches, the Georgian and Victorian architecture adorning the streets also provides insights into the city’s rich history. Stay into the evening for the bars and clubs of this lively district.

At the core of the city centre is Millennium Square, a modern and spacious plaza surrounded by some of Leeds’ most iconic landmarks. Admire the majestic façade of the Leeds City Museum that rises over the eastern side of the square. Enter for its vast and eclectic collection of historic relics, decorative art and natural history.

Bordering the plaza’s southern side is the redbrick building of the Carriageworks theatre. Check out its programme of innovative and diverse shows, ranging from stand-up comedy and poetic storytelling to plays and other events. Enjoy cocktails at one of the bars in the square’s corners.

Beside the plaza stands St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, one of the highlights of the zone. Study the neo-gothic architecture of this spiritual haven, constructed at the turn of the 20th century.

On a rainy afternoon, go shopping in the Trinity Leeds Mall or The Light, which also has a cinema. For a more upscale selection, stroll beneath the arched glass ceiling of the Thorntons Arcade, known for its extraordinary clock mechanism and high-end stores.

Stay into the evening and head to the O2 Academy Leeds, whose stage has been graced by some of the world’s most famous bands, including Madness, the Kaiser Chiefs and MGMT.

To reach this district, arrive at the Leeds Railway Station, which is just a 10-minute walk south from Millennium Square. The areas of Headingley and University of Leeds are directly north from here.

The Leeds City Centre is a hub of dramatic arts and historic buildings.
