"clean room and friendly staff. cheap and cheerful.
calling the hotel amsterdam south is a bit cheeky though. this is in amstelveen, a dutch commuter town outside amsterdam city limits. the location is in an alright residential area, near a canal off the amstel river, but expect the "authentic" dutch commuter experience of cycling 10-15 min to the tram stop or NS station, or 45 min to centrum. for me this was an upside, but i imagine the average amsterdam tourist does not want this and would rather be closer to the busyness of amsterdam proper.
(tip: bikes aren't allowed on trams; and not allowed on trains at peak times, and cost extra. folding bikes are allowed without restriction or cost. i cant imagine staying here being enjoyable without my brompton.)
the loss of one star is from poor sound isolation. my neighbors were great, but could be an issue if you are unfortunate enough to get less considerate neighbors."
