"Lovely Japanese-style hotel with every amenity you could want: free coffee, onsen, laundry, robes, etc… Spacious, clean rooms. Loved the massage I booked! (As a side note: restaurants in the area close very early. We arrived after 7 pm and had no dining options. Apparently there is dining at the hotel restaurant if you book it as a package? We didn’t add it at the time of booking so we were left with dinner options from the mini mart across the street. Word to the wise. )"

"Stayed in the room with a private bath, and its own interior water feature/mineral water stream. Possibly the best room(s - it was more of a suite) I’ve ever stayed in.
Clean tatami mats, lovely meal, great private bath - we spent a lot of our visit just sitting next to the small waterfall/stream and reading."

"Breakfast ladies were great. If your darker than beige, you may have a different experience than others. They charged me twice the lodging rate, made it difficult to call a taxi, were suspicious and unwelcoming. The room itself had everything you wouls need. Is walkable to the train station about twenty minute walk, the location is near the dam so thats relaxing, theres a public bath that was obviously not for me but for more cherished guests, the grounds are good, the town is cute with lots of...

"I absolutely loved my stay at this hotel. A note for Americans and Europeans--this is a Japanese business-style hotel. It is small and functional and perfect as such. It is not a big resort hotel. It is not a spacious room for you to spread out in. It is functional and perfect for those who are there to enjoy the place and not the hotel itself. The hotel is wonderful and the staff are extremely nice. They are helpful with recommendations and holding luggage and very accommodating. The beds are a...

"Our room was clean and spacious. Finding it was a challenge for the local cab driver. The breakfast was just breads but I enjoyed the mugwort rolls! I’d recommend that they add a washer/dryer to some rooms. Also, the sleeping clothes were a little worn. Mine was missing an important button. The staff were friendly but it could be hard to communicate with them over the phone."

"Buffet breakfast was on the colder side (for instance, the grilled mackerel was not hot enough), but the udon was very good- we had 2 servings - and the pastries with whipped butter and marmalade were yummy.
The Japanese breakfast served in the cozy restaurant on the basement floor was very good - its tofu simmering in soy milk broth which could be enjoyed to the last drop was very interesting as it was our first encounter with this dish (gotta wait 5 minutes (for the tofu to be ready), said...

"This is a wonderful hotel.
The rooms are ergonomically designed.
Breakfast is wonderful.
The view of the river and the panoramic view of Higashiyama from the bar and lobby lounge is great.
There is even a lounge and patio with a firepit and complementary wine and marshmallows.
Do not miss out on the Shimabara Tayu show if you happen to be there.
And only a few steps away is the river and Gion area, the gateway to everything.
The staff are so kind and helpful.
We loved our stay here."
